Mid Century and Traditional: An Unexpected Combination
When taking on the task of accessorizing this furniture grouping, designer Lynn Witmer selected pieces of bold, mid century ceramics and accent furniture. While the room is anchored with traditional furniture including an English linen-covered chesterfield sofa, a marble top Swedish chest and table, large Venetian mirrors and carved French consoles, Lynn began accessorizing from the opposite end of the spectrum.
When placed in front of the linen sofa, the sleek black glass and chrome tables loosen up the mood while the clean, modern lines of the Barcelona chairs are the perfect counterpoint for the ornately carved French consoles. The bold shapes and colors of the Mid Century German pottery pieces have more impact within a neutral palette of cream, black and pale gray. The Chinese cabinet of open shelves displays a large collection of Roger Capron ceramics glazed with whimsical multicolor stripes and designs. It’s the combination of disparate elements – ornate and traditional with strong, modern colors and lines – that brings this space to life.
